Given I basically only had a name to work from, and that it was one of the last things I’d ever do for the company, I decided to go a bit over-the-top with the art. And by over-the-top, I mean I blindly charged beret-first into the gaseous cloud of the arty farty.

Essentially, this piece is an exploration of the phenomenon of anthropomorphism. Here, the professor considers a butterfly that has lighted upon his book. The title of the book, A Sound of Thunder, is a short story by Ray Bradbury (or, I guess in this case, Ray Bradbirdy) in which a time traveler accidentally changes the course of history by stepping on a prehistoric butterfly . The implication: even the most minor change to universe’s history could have resulted in another species gaining the evolutionary upper-hand instead of humans. Think about it.

“A Sound of Thunder” also refers to the noise your head made when I blew your mind just then.

Anyway, above you’ll find some miscellaneous pieces from Shadow at the Water’s Edge. Nothing too flashy, but they were all that was left in the folder. You’ll enjoy them more if you imagine they’re like the french fries at the bottom of the McDonald’s bag: small, unexpected surprises that are covered in grease and salt. Yum!

Japan, you need to stop dressing up your cats. Stop dressing them up. Just stop. And for the love of all that’s good and holy stop making game shows about dressing cats up. And if you insist on dressing up your cats and making game shows about dressing up your cats please DO NOT DRESS UP LIKE A CAT YOURSELF ON THE GAME SHOW.

That’s sartorial harassment, and they don’t have to take it.

As you can see, I tried hard to give the effect of a cheaply-printed manga, completely with chunky half-tones and lousy paper. Unfortunately, for all my attempts to make this as mangay as possi… whoa, er, for all my attempts to make this as manga-esque as possible, this still somehow ended up looking a LOT like a Zack Rock comic. I think I went wrong when I drew it while me.

Be sure to come back next week for page 2, wherein our heroes talk a lot more, and a verbal joke undermines a visual one. STAY TUNED!

Anyway, in the coming weeks I’ll be posting pages from the Manga comic I did for Shadow’s at the Water’s Edge, the spine-tingling Nancy Drew PC Adventure that sets the plucky teenage sleuth in the heart of the Rising Sun to deduce what villain stole the Emperor’s lady-shaped pillow I think, I honestly couldn’t get through the first few puzzles but I think that’s how it went down.

Hope you enjoy it, and don’t get too distracted by the fact that I keep giving my characters the same haircut.

Oh, I should point out that most of the script was written by Nik Blahunka, but I added my share of zingers and weird visual gags.
